Chrysler showing off extended range vehicle to dealers today

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Chrysler dealers all over North America are supposed to get their first peek today at the company’s plans to bring an electric vehicle to market.

Chrysler is hoping to energize their dealers and gain some public capital like General Motors scored last week by showing off the production version of its electric car, the Chevy Volt.

Back in January, Chrysler showed three electric concepts at the North American International Auto Show — the Dodge Zeo, Jeep Renegade and Chrysler ecoVoyager.

The Chrysler concepts were at least as stunning as the Chevy Volt, visually. But Auburn Hills hasn’t uttered a peep about the project since.

Until now. Two weeks ago, in the run-up to GM’s unveiling, Chrysler vice-chairman Jim Press started dropping hints in his public appearances about the company’s determination to bring plug-in electric vehicles to market.

In August, it turns out, Chrysler shocked some of its senior U.S. and Canadian dealers by giving them a surprise opportunity to drive an early prototype of one of its electric vehicles.

But today the entire dealer body may get to see the car during a company broadcast to its U.S. national dealer network. They’ve cancelled the annual product show usually held in Las Vegas, in favour of the broadcast.
